Review 1
Within their tour through Germany Sophia played at the Karlstorbahnhof
in Heidelberg. The location is really nice: It's not so big but the
atmosphere is really cool. Many people came to see Robin Proper-Sheppard
and his band and so the hall was almost full.
Jansen on the guitar and his partner on the contrabass began to play
at 9:00 PM. Their music is quite funny but it's very hard to understand
Jansen when he sings. He has a very smoky voice but he really tried
to entertain the audience.
Then, about 20 minutes after Jansen left the stage, Sophia started
their show. The setlist was very similar to the ones listed before,
so I won't write it down again. They began with the song "I left
you" and after that Robin complained about the lights on stage:
in his opinion they were far to bright. After the next song, he was
still not satisfied and he told the audience (and the lightmaster)
that there's even no need to see their faces when they perform. So
they almost turned off the fronts and only used the lights from the
back. Robin liked it now and he said, that these lights are moody
and sexy now. ;)
Robin and his band played many songs from their newest album "People
are like season" and a few from older CDs. I think it was a good
mix with slow sophia-typical slow songs and faster ones. The concert
began very quiet but in "Desert Song No. 2" they really
burned down fireworks. At the end and in the addition they really
rocked the house. And the second addition "Another Trauma"
was a great final for the show. Robin played this song all alone on
stage with his guitar - emotional and fantastic performace. He thanked
the audience several times, and I had the impression that he enjoyed
the show as much as we did.
All in all it was a awesome gig and I think noboby regretted to go
there. If you have the possibility to go to a Sophia concert: Do it,
it's really worth its price!

Sophia. Ich komme gerade vom Sophia-Konzert im Karlstorbahnhof. Ein
unglaublich intensives Erlebnis. Es fällt mir schwer, die passenden
Worte für die Gefühlswoge zu finden, die mich erfasst hat.
Kurzfristig musste ich doch allein zum Konzert gehen. Im Nachhinein
vielleicht gar nicht schlecht. So war ich allein mit meinen Gedanken,
meinen Gefühlen. Die Musik von Sophia bedeutet mir so extrem
viel - viel mehr als Musik anderer Bands. Das Album "the infinite
circle" hat mich durch dunkle Tage begleitet, mir trotz aller
Melancholie und Traurigkeit, die die Musik ausstrahlt, Mut gegeben,
zu kämpfen. Gegen die Verzweiflung. Wie hätte ich reagieren
sollen, wenn ich nicht allein auf dem Konzert gewesen wäre und
Freunde die Musik nur "schön" gefunden hätten?
Nicht diese intensiven Gefühle verspürt hätten wie
ich. Nicht empfunden hätten, dass es keine andere Musik auf der
Welt braucht als genau diese.
Sophia haben fast alle Songs des neuen Albums "people are like
seasons" gespielt, dazu ein paar ältere wie "if only",
"woman" und "so slow". Robin Proper-Sheppard hat
fast komplett mit geschlossenen Augen gesungen, als würde er
in seiner eigenen Welt sein, die Songs und Texte noch einmal durchleben.
Seine Stimme klingt live mindestens genau so gut wie auf den Platten.
Voller Verzweiflung, Traurigkeit. Das was die Band auf der Bühne
gezeigt hat, grenzte an Perfektionismus - im absolut positiven Sinn.
Proper-Sheppard scheint ohnehin jemand zu sein, der nur sich selbst
vertraut: Er stimmt die Gitarren, er fährt den Tour-Van und verkauft
nach dem Konzert sogar seine CDs selbst. Nach dem wunderschönen
ersten Teil des Konzerts folgte eine Zugabe, die das Publikum wahrscheinlich
komplett an die Wand geblasen hat. Extrem harte Versionen von "the
river song" und "if a change is gonna come", die erahnen
lassen wie Konzerte seiner früheren Band The God Machine abgelaufen
sein müssen. Ein Riesenkontrast zum Programm der vorigen Stunde
und doch perfekt passend. Den Schluss des Konzertes bestritt Proper-Sheppard
allein. Er kam zur letzten Zugabe auf die Bühne zurück und
spielte "another trauma", den wohl schönsten Song vom
neuen Album. Während des Konzertes betonte er immer wieder, dass
das Heidelberger Publikum "the most polite audience of the whole
german tour" sei. Während der Songs herrschte absolute Stille,
niemand hat geredet. Die perfekte Stimmung für ein Sophia-Konzert.
Ich hab einen sehr intensiven Abend erlebt, Musik werde ich heute
vor dem Schlafengehen keine mehr hören. Ich will die Stimmung,
die Gefühle, die Eindrücke nicht verfälschen und mit
ihnen einschlafen.
