Warning: Robin Proper-Sheppard’s Sophia are back and, most important of all, with a full electric band.
Yes, Sophia was a full band in the past, but this time it’s different. Different because the new record they’re promoting, As We Make Our Way, even though it keeps the melancholic side of their music, it also shows noisy, engaging and expansive traits, a tension that comes from the will to go on and of being bullish about moving forward.
Robin Proper-SheppardThe small and cosy venue in Amsterdam, The Bitterzoet, dependant on the legendary Paradiso, was the first place where the new line-up was introducing and defending the new songs, on Friday, April 22nd.
The aforementioned record still retains a lot of the acoustic sensibility Proper-Sheppard has always displayed, a feeling that inspired musicians like the equally inventive Malcolm Middleton, formerly Scotland’s Arab Strap and with a very solid and diverse solo career. But live things work differently. Proper-Sheppard doesn’t use the acoustic at all and the band, formed by younger musicians, is not afraid of using a range of effects from one song to the next and they also show their versatility by playing different instruments or backing the singer’s vocals in many tunes.
You realize something has really changed when the repertoire starts with a screeching feedback that gives way to the incredible new song “Resisting”, a song that works in two ways: its music is pungent, sharp, rocky but at the same time the lyrics talk about a dead-end in a relationship. The chorus, “I don’t why we’re always resisting or what we’re even kicking against,” is the climax and the benchmark of the new life this band has onstage.
The rest of the As We Make Our Way benefits from the weight of being played live, with no restrictions nor restraints.
The classics of Sophia, which formed the second part of the concert, provided a clear idea of how long this stint of the band could be, not only by injecting new details and mixing in new sounds and instruments but also by infusing new vigour to the group of songs. “Oh My Love”, “So Slow”, “If Only” or “Bad Man” didn’t sound dated or out of place there.
The rocky, blunt, direct and loud end with “River Song” left the impression that Sophia’s is one of the best indie gigs you’ll be able to watch in Europe, this spring.

Het is goed om Robin Proper-Sheppard weer op het podium te zien. De laatste jaren waren zijn optredens zeer spaarzaam en nieuwe muziek was er voor het laatst in 2009. In de Bitterzoet in Amsterdam presenteerde hij met zijn band Sophia het nieuwe album As We Make Our Way (Unknown Harbours).
Dit album lijkt een nieuwe stap in de loopbaan van Robin Proper-Sheppard. Voor het eerst zijn niet alle teksten op het de plaat door en door treurig. Dit heeft als gevolg dat de muziek ook een stuk minder zwaar op de maag ligt. Het probleem is echter wel dat de fans juist dol zijn op de ellende in de teksten en de muziek. Het is een handelsmerk van Sophia.
Waar de band vorig jaar tijdens het verrassende optreden op Into The Great Wide Open oud en nieuw werk met elkaar afwisselde, koos men in Amsterdam ervoor om eerst het nieuwe album integraal te spelen. Alleen de instrumentale openingstrack sloegen ze over. Volgens Proper-Sheppard had de band dit nummer nog niet goed onder de knie. Hoogtepunten waren de nummers Resisting met typische old school Sophia- en God Machine-elementen, de single Drifter en het relatief lichtvoetige California.
Vuurdoop
Na het spelen al die nieuwe nummers was het tijd voor een terugblik en volgende nog een set met klassiek Sophia-materiaal. Opvallend was dat de zanger-gitarist zich plots leek te ontspannen. Tijdens het eerste deel van het concert vertelde hij dat jij behoorlijk zenuwachtig was, die zenuwen waren na de vuurdoop van het album voor een groot deel weg. Er was opeens plek voor grapjes en interactie met het publiek.
En de muziek was als vanouds weer goed. De combinatie van klaagzang en sonisch gitaargeweld blijft een combinatie waar ik (en met mij velen in de zaal) geen genoeg van krijgen. Mij favoriet was het prachtige So Slow van het eerste album van Sophia uit 1996. Het enige minpuntje was dat de drummer niet helemaal meeging in de hardere passages. Ook daar bleef zijn spel wat nonchalant, terwijl een beetje meer beukwerk veel had kunnen toevoegen.
Het is te hopen dat voor de grillige Robin Proper-Sheppard deze vuurdoop ook is bevallen. Als hij een setlist kan maken met een mooie mix van oud en nieuw dan staat Sophia de band weer als een huis. Hopelijk duurt het dit keer geen jaren voordat hij weer live te zien is. Gelukkig is er in de tussentijd wel een mooi nieuw album.
