Sophia - Nov. 10 ’04: De Velinx, Tongeren (B) (+ string quartet) with The Album Leaf

Review 1
Since the "De Nachten" album, you all know that festivals or venues with a "De" in their name are located somewhere in Belgium or the Netherlands. Yesterday, the Sophia tourbus stopped at "De Velinx" in Tongeren, Belgium's oldest city (2000+ years).
After two hours in the fog, snow and traffic jams, I arrived just in time to see The Album Leaf kick off the evening. Don't ask me what kind of creative Pacific stream hits the San Diego shores, but these nice fellows come from the city that already gave us nifty bands such as Trumans Water, Three Mile Pilot and The Rapture. Not to mention The God Machine's San Diego roots. The foursome surprised us with 45 minutes of excellent drony electronica with references to Berg Sans Nipple or - Belgiums best - Styrofoam. Icelands Best - aka Sigur Ros - were fans already. They can add me to the list now!
Enough promo talk for The Album Leaf. The main reason for driving 200 kilometers was of course the "Sophia with strings" show. The band started with a new song, Wind in your Sail, one of those traditional Sophia tearjerkers. What followed was a selection from all four albums (mainly focusing on the recent People Are Like Seasons). Not too different from earlier Sophia gigs. Apart from the string quartet, indeed. In fact, the string quartet didn't dominate the songs at all - I got the impression the string quartet was just a cheap excuse to get a fancy sleeper coach including three pretty young girls! During some of the songs, the background role of the string quartet felt a bit unfortunate as it would have been a perfect opportunity to give some songs an extra dimension. The string intro to Desert Song 2 and the arrangement for Bad Man were nevertheless very touching! Not to forget the frightening atmosphere they added to the ending of The River Song. Anyway, even if the added value of the strings was not enormous, we didn't really feel being ripped off ...
After the show, everyone was queueing at the merchandising stall to get one of those awesome tour cds. A tour cd is probably an understatement: just like the "De Nachten" album, this is not some kind of intermezzo. Okay, it has a new version of Holidays Are Nice, but also some excellent new songs. We already knew Razorblades from the previous tour and the Pet Shop Boys cover with Adele from Arab Strap (the song that was supposed to be on the legendary and infamour tour 10"). Next to that two real new songs we also heard at "De Velinx": opener Wind In Your Sail and the magnificent instrumental Airports (used as an intro tune ?). To cut a long story short: a must-buy! At a very reasonable price of 12 euro, that includes hand-folding and a limited edition numbering.

'People Are Like Seasons' heet hun eerder dit jaar verschenen cd.
'Bad Man' klonk later onheilspellend en de drie (!) gitaren in het afsluitende 'If a Change Is Gonna Come' waren letterlijk schokkend.
Hoe luisterrijk hielden ze elkaar op 'I Left You' - ingehouden zang, gedempte drums, mistroostige piano, huilende gitaar - in evenwicht.
